What is a Digital Product Passport? A clear guide

A practical explanation of what a DPP is, what it contains and how it connects a physical product to trusted data.

A physical product connected to translucent digital information layers

A Digital Product Passport, or DPP, is a structured digital record linked to a physical product, component or material. A person can open it through a data carrier such as a QR code, while software can use the same identity to exchange product data.

It is data, not the QR code itself

The code or NFC tag is only the entry point. Behind it sits a persistent product identifier and a record that can remain available as the product moves from manufacturing to sale, service, reuse and recycling.

What information can a DPP contain?

Typical fields include product and manufacturer identity, materials and origin, technical characteristics, certificates, repair information and end-of-life instructions. The exact mandatory fields are not universal: the EU defines them separately for each regulated product group.

Who uses the passport?

Customers can check the product and its care information. Manufacturers and distributors can share one reliable record. Repairers and recyclers can find the instructions they need, while authorities can verify compliance. Access rights may differ, so not every field has to be public.

A sensible first step

Start with one product or batch. Define a stable identifier, decide who owns each data field and test the complete path from marking to scan. This reveals missing data and production constraints before a wider rollout.

Turn your first product into a working passport

Only Original connects a persistent product ID, structured data and the QR or NFC entry point in one system. See how that flow works from marking to the live product page.
